Volkswagen vans are a unique German brand of motorcar that date back to the 1950’s. The most popular make from this era is the Volkswagen Transporter also referred to as Kombi, VW bus or Hippie van. Some of most recent versions of Volkswagen vans available in the market are VW transporter, VW Caddy, VW Crafter, VW Caravelle, VW Transporter Shuttle, VW California, VW Routan, VW Caddy Maxi Life and VW Sportline range.
The Volkswagen Transporter (T1 –T3) van had a rear air cooled engine and was among the first automobiles with driver’s seat on forward wheel to be rolled out to the mass market. Its production lane ran from version T1 to T5. In terms of design it could come in various styles depending on use. Some had rear seats, side windows and raised sky roofs while others had neither side widows nor back seats with a rail door. T1 was produced between 1950 and 1967. It had split windshield and was powered by a 25 to 42 horsepower 4 cylinder air cooled rear engine. T2’s production ran from 1968 to 1979 it featured a 35 to 70 horsepower rear engine and CV joints fitted on its half shaft transaxles. It also came with either a 3 speed automatic or a 4 speed manual transmission system. In terms of passenger capacity T2 could hold 8 to 9 people when fitted with rear seats.
T3 on the other hand was on the market between1979 to 1991 and was a complete redesign of its predecessors from the interior, mechanicals and exterior. It was also used water cooling for both the gasoline and diesel engine models. Besides this it also came in either two or four wheel drive that was powered by a 37 to 82 kilowatt fuel injection engine.
Meanwhile T4 (Eurovan) has been on the market since 1990 while T5 is the most resent version of the VW Transporter van. They both have frontend water cooled engine along with other modern apparatus such as ABS, air bags, electronic controls and audio system.
